India's batting mainstay Virat Kohli became the fastest batsman to score 5000 runs in one-day internationals when he scored 86 against West Indies in the first ODI in Kochi on Thursday.

Kohli achieved the feat in just 120 matches and 114 innings. He has so far amassed 5005 runs, which included 17 centuries and 27 fifties in his short career.

In terms of innings, Kohli has equalled the record of Sir Viv Richards of West Indies, who also achieved the feat in 114 innings way back in 1987 but it was Viv's 126th match.

Kohli also became, at 25 years 16 days, the second youngest to achieve the distinction, next only to 23 years 294 days taken by Sachin Tendulkar.

Before Kohli, former captain Sourav Ganguly was the fastest to achieve the feat among Indian batsmen in 131 matches and 126 innings.

In the top ten fastest batsman list, we have three West Indians - Viv Richards (114 innings), Brian Lara (118 innings) and Gordon Greenidge (121 innings), three Australians - Dean Jones (128 innings), Matthew Hayden (133 innings) and Michael Bevan (135 innings), and two South Africans - AB de Villiers (124 innings) and Graeme Smith (131 innings).

From India, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (135 innings), Gautam Gambhir (135 innings) and Sachin Tendulkar (138 innings) are the next fastest batsmen to reach the 5000 runs in ODIs.

Kohli is averaging 86.11 in chases in ODIs this year - his aggregate being 775 in fifteen innings (six times not out), including three hundreds and five fifties.

Kohli's tally of 1119 (ave. 55.95) in 29 matches is the joint second highest in ODIs this year.

The leading run-scorers of 2013 are Rohit Sharma (1143), Kohli (1119), Misbah-ul-Haq (1119), George Bailey (1098) and Kumar Sangakkara (1033).
